Shading dress folds tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to make pixel shaded folds. I use PSP 9 but it can be made in any paint program including MS Paint.

Step 1: You need a doll and a color palette. If you use psp or photoshop you can draw yourself and ellipse (on an new layer) as a guideline to place your folds. MS Paint users, you won't be able to do that but keep in mind that your folds need to fall longer in the front and higher on each side just like the ellipse shape. Step 2: With the darkest color of your palette, draw your outline. For the bottom folds, follow the ellipse shape just like the pic above.
Step 3: The easiest step in this tutorial, flood fill your outline with color #4! :P Step 4: With the second color of your palette start applying shadow. You will want to place it on each side of the dress, everywhere where the bottom line is highter (like the red arrow above). For the top part of the dress, place shadow each side of the inner arm, under the breast and some little lines here and there around the waist.
Step 5: With color #3 of the palette, give more depth to your folds. This step is what will give the shape of your folds so it's really important! I won't go in much details for the top, just follow the pic and for the bottom see the red arrow? On larger folds you want to give them a style so adding a little shadow in the center will make your dress look more real! Also note that the folds are always larget at the bottom and get thinner at the top. I like finishing them with dotted line it makes a nice blend with the rest of the dress. Step 6: With color #5 it's now time to apply highlights. Highlights are the opposite of shadow. You want to apply them where the folds are lower then the rest of the dress. Follow my red arrows to help you! Also notice my dotted technique, to finish my lines, it makes a nice blend between the colors!
Step 7: You can use color #3 to shade the bottom outline of the dress, but I didn't do it, depending on the palette used, sometimes it's not necessary. If you want to do it, just recolor the lower part of the outline where you have placed the highlights on the previous step. You can add decorations, a corset, belt, anything you like!

Your done! You have finished your first pixel shaded dress! Try to be original, do not reproduce this tutorial pixel by pixel, it as been made to help you and to show you my technique, adapt it to your own style!

Base used for this tutorial is from Quinqui, and color palette from Josie's dollz.
