Pixel shaded hair tutorial

This tutorial was created to show you how to make wavy pixel shaded hair. I use PSP 9 but it can be made in any paint program including MS Paint.

Step 1: You will need a doll and a hair palette. Start with color #4 of the palette to draw your outline. Draw some strands in it and put some shadow under the arms, each side of the neck and on top of the head. Step 2: With color #3, apply some shadow over the one did on step 1. Leave space between the two colors.
Step 3: With color #2 apply some more shadow over the color #3 and again don't forget to leave space between the two colors. Step 4: With color #1 apply the darkest shadow over color #2 but very lightly. Always leave space between the colors!
Step 5: With color #5, flood fill all the other areas. Step 6: Start applying highlights with color #6. Go over the filling color and leave space between the two colors.
Step 7: More lights! With the last color of the palette, apply more highlights over the one did on step 6. Again, leave space between the colors or your hair won't look good. It's normal at this step that they wont be highlighted everywhere like around the neck and under the arms! The light will reflect on top of the hair, not under! Step 8: Back with color #4, add some strands here and there and with your base outline color, shade your scalp. This is important, it makes the hair look more real!

You're done! This technique can be use for any type of hair, ringlets, straight, curly ect... Be original, do not reproduce this tutorial pixel by pixel, it as been made to help you pixel shade hair, try to adapt it to your own style!
