Mermaid tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to make a mermaid. I use PSP 9 but it can be made in any paint program including MS Paint.

Step 1: First you will need a doll and a color palette. Draw your outline with color #1 and add some little dots on her waist to blend the skin with the tail. You can skip this but I think it looks nice! Step 2: With color #2 start applying shadow. Note that I have extended the lines on the fin. I have applied the shadow only on the left side since I decided that light come from the right side. Apply very lightly on the frill.
Step 3: With color #3, apply a second round of shadow. Don't make the lines straight, to give a texture effect. (I'm using a dot technique called dithering). Again extend the lines on the fin. Step 4: Flood fill the empty areas with color #4. Apply lightly on the frill.
Step 5: With color #5, apply first round of highlights in the middle of the tail. If you want a nice scale effect make the borders dotted. Step 6: With the last color of your palette, apply some more highlights in the middle of the tail and at the end of the fin. Flood fill the rest of the frill. This is optional but if you wish to make a great light effect, draw a line on the right side of the tail.
Step 7: Another optional step but that will make your tail looks a lot nicer is putting some dots on the right side of the tail with color white.

And that's it, your done! You have just finished a beautiful mermaid! Try to be original, do not reproduce this tutorial pixel by pixel, it as been made to help you and to show you my technique, adapt it to your own style!

Base used for this tutorial is from The Purple Dungeon.
